Whole foods can be medicine. Foods grown in fertile soil are full of vital ingredients for health. The soil imparts energy and nutrients into the harvest we partake. The medicines in the food, prepared for maximal absorption, trigger biochemical and physiological reactions that support cellular repair and help the body reverse disease. It is a way to conserve our vital force by eating foods that retain their life force rather than processed foods.
Each Rx Bag is curated by Jifunza Wright-Carter, M.D., M.P.H., a family physician who has used food as medicine for over 4 decades in her practice and community health work. As a result, the art of medicine has been honed, and many patients and community members have experienced improved health. Our aim is for families to achieve higher levels of well-being, food security, and disease prevention at an affordable price. Each bag is configured to serve either a household of 1 to 2 people or a family of 4+. The Rx Bag includes enough nutrient-rich foods to last 7-10 days. Each Market Day will feature food demos and tastings to share ways to prepare what is in your bag to get the most medicine and make the most of what you have. The therapeutic foods in the Rx Bag selections are selected based on the type of medicine they contain, quality, and affordability.
Expect lots of vegetables in your vegetable bundles, as they have a lot of medicinal benefits. The Rx Bag will contain greens for weekly consumption. They are in the Brassica or cruciferous family of vegetables. When properly prepared, they contain a substance called glucosinolates that are cancer-preventive, detoxifying, and cardiovascular-protective. To get the most from this medicine, these vegetables should NOT be boiled. We encourage stir-fry, steaming, juicing or eating raw to get the highest concentration of this medicine.
There will be a fruit bundle in your Rx Bag. Citrus (lemons/or limes, oranges) can be used in herbal tea & other food preparations (baked fish, soups, sauces, etc.). Seasonal selections, such as apples or pears, will be the mainstay for their cleansing properties, depending on what is in season and available.
A plant-based protein bundle will include legumes (beans and or peas) as well as whole grains (rice, millet, oats, etc.). These foods can be rolled into multiple menus throughout the week, including snacks
The Medicine Bag is dedicated to plant medicines. It includes herbs to incorporate into beneficial beverages, hot or cold, as well as a medicinal broth blend to help families fortify their immunity and better manage the stressful times we are in. They are powerful enough to do the job but gentle enough for everyone to benefit and are most effective when incorporated into broths for soups, stews or dishes eaten daily. Other plant medicines, such as medicinal mushrooms, roots, and other superfoods, will be included as available.
Our commitment is to provide quality, therapeutic foods in quantities that allow you and your family to access nutritious food at the most affordable price possible. The price of the Rx Bag will vary, but we will do all we can to create cost savings without compromising quality.
